Title : Beautiful child's senseless death

Reporter : Sue Hoffart

Article : LUCI Milne's family always believed she was a survivor because of the way she began her life 14 years ago .  But Luci's life ended in a senseless , tragic accident while joyriding on the spoiler of a car at  Omokoroa at the weekend . She fell from the car , hit her head on the kerb and died in Tauranga Hospital's intensive care unit on Saturday night . The tall , blonde teenager was born 3 months early and started out with a fight for survival in an Auckland premature carr unit . " We though we were going to lose her ... but she made it ," aunt Pamela Scales said today . "And she grew into this beautiful child" . "We've always believed because Luci came into this world and had a bit of a struggle ,  that she's always had this light  . She just had a love for life and she was absolutely adored by her family  " . Luci was a bridesmaid at Ms Scales's wedding five years ago and she often stayed with her aunt in Auckland . Coincidentally , the teenager and her friends were discussing death a few weeks ago . Luci had lightheartedly told her friends she wanted to be buried in a long white dress . " These girlfriends have gone out and found a dress and they're bringing it round here ," Ms Scales said from the family home . "She had a lot of lovely , lovely friends and she spent every minute with them ." Ms Scales said Luci was behaving like a typical teenager when she sneaked out of the house to meet her friends and rode on the back of the car late on Friday night. " It's just the worst nightmare a family can go through and if  things had gone a little differently we could've found her asleep in bed the next morning " . Instead , her parents Robin and Alyson Milne and 17-year-old sister Georgina and the rest of her family are making funeral arrangements . The Milnes have not yet set a date for the funeral service but want to bring their daughter home for a day beforehand , to give her numerous friends and family members a chance to say their goodbyes . Luci attended St Peter's School and was to begin year 11 at the Cambridge boarding school next month . Ms Scales described her niece as a fun loving , happy person , who adored dolphins , the sea and her horse Lili . The 14-year-old would often phone her grandparents in Chirstchurch , place the receiver next to the piano and play for them the classical music they loved . "She was a very spiritual child , she had amazing energy " . The Milnes moved to Omokoroa from Auckland back in 1990 , when Mr Milne became operations manger at Tauranga Hosipital . He was chief executive of the hospital until 1996 .
